Kraft and Eco-Friendly Labels: When Matte Kraft Beats Glossy Vinyl (and When It Doesn't)

If your product is small-batch, organic, handmade or just trying to look less like a factory and more like a farm stand, kraft labels are probably the first thing you reached for. That instinct is right. Uncoated kraft paper has a texture and warmth that glossy vinyl can't fake, and it signals natural, artisan and eco friendly better than almost any other material.

But kraft has real limits, and nobody selling it to you usually says so. This guide covers when kraft paper labels are the smart call, when they'll actually hurt your product, and what to pick from our roll labels instead: we do not sell kraft labels right now, our paper labels are white paper on a roll.

What kraft labels actually are

Kraft labels are printed on uncoated, textured paper stock made largely from recycled or unbleached wood fibers, usually in that recognizable brown tone (a white kraft option exists too for a cleaner look with the same texture). Because the paper is uncoated, ink soaks in slightly instead of sitting on top like it does with vinyl, which is exactly why kraft prints look soft, matte and a little rustic instead of glossy and synthetic.

This is also why kraft counts as one of the more genuinely eco friendly and recycled labels options: the base stock has real recycled content and is more readily recyclable than a plastic film label, even though the adhesive backing and liner are still handled like standard label waste.

Where kraft paper wins

Kraft earns its reputation with natural product labels because the material does half the branding work before your logo even goes on. It reads as handmade, small-batch and low-impact, which matters for categories where customers are actively looking for those cues.

• Coffee and tea bags, dry spice jars, bakery boxes and dry pantry goods
• Candles, bar soap (kept out of the shower), bath salts, natural cosmetics
• Craft beer, wine and spirits going for a rustic, non-corporate label
• Honey jars, jams and preserves if the label stays away from sticky drips
• Gift packaging, hang tags and boxes where texture sells the unboxing

The honest limits: kraft is not waterproof

Here's the part most sticker shops skip: kraft paper labels are not waterproof and not dishwasher safe. Because the stock is uncoated, it absorbs moisture instead of shedding it. A drop of water, condensation from a cold drink, or a humid bathroom shelf can wrinkle, smear or peel the label within minutes.

If your product goes in a fridge, freezer, cooler, shower, or gets wiped down with a wet cloth, kraft is the wrong call, and it's worth saying that clearly before you order 500 of them. For anything touching moisture, oils, or repeat handling, waterproof dishwasher-safe vinyl is the better material, and you can still get a matte vinyl finish if you want the low-shine kraft look without the risk.

What we print instead: white paper, BOPP or poly on a roll

We do not print kraft labels right now. Our roll labels come in white paper (with or without lamination), white BOPP or white poly, in 13 set sizes and runs from 25 labels.

White paper labels keep a paper feel for dry goods, gift packaging and products that stay away from moisture; a matte lamination or matte UV keeps the low-shine look. For anything that sees water, condensation or oil, white BOPP or white poly is the better pick. All of them come wound on a roll in sequence, ready for hand application or a dispenser.
